Summer in the Valley, Part Two
Contributed by Steve Beckley
Summer is fast approaching, and it’s a great time to enjoy the people, places and beauty of the Sacramento Valley. I wrote an earlier blog about six of my favorite seasonal things to do. Here are the remaining half-dozen:
Attend a County Fair
Summer time is county fair time in the Valley. A great way to learn about the area’s agriculture. A listing of county fairs is here. All have great food and wonderful exhibits.
Eat Some Ice Cream
Ice cream and summer are made for each other. Some of my favorites are: Brocks Ice Cream – Yuba City, Schuberts Ice Cream – Chico, and Jeff’s Frezzette (excellent soft serve ice cream) – Colusa.
Enjoy The River
On or close to the Sacramento River is a wonderful place to cool down. River access is available at places such as Colusa – Sacramento River State Recreation Area and Corning’s Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area. One of my favorite ways to enjoy the river is to have a cold drink or dinner on the deck of Colusa’s Steelhead Lodge.
Taste Some Wine
This is on all my favorite things to do lists. You will find me enjoying a glass of wine on the deck at Zamora’s Matchbook Wine Company, visiting with the Monks at New Clairvaux Vineyards in Vina or enjoying the Sutter Buttes at Cordi Winery west of Live Oak.
Travel The Back Roads
Shut off the GPS on the phone and travel the valley’s back roads. Slow down and take a look at the crops. I travel the valley several times a week and always try to take a different route coming and going. Will recommend that you carry glass cleaner and paper towels as might run into a bug or two.
Wear aloha shirts
Aloha shirts are perfect for summer in the valley. One of the best collections around is at Bird In The Hand in Chico. That where I buy many of mine.
I’m privileged to live in such a great place with so many things to do. I hope you will list your favorite things to do in the summer in the comments section. Always looking for new things to do!
