Stories from the valley

Subtile on a Windy Day

Contributed by Roberta Firoved

The West Sacramento River Walk and The Bridge District continues to develop as a location of upbeat housing, entertainment, art and culture.

Subtile is a sculpture as the newest addition by artist Federico Díaz. The is an over 40-foot tall form on four trunk-like structures. Subtile consists of a steel frame covered in over 4,000 2-inch, laser cut steel discs. The discs are the leaves designed to flutter in the wind and emulate the trees along the Sacramento River. Díaz’s concept in creating artwork of this type is to make invisible things visible. The concept behind the design is to create what appears to be an error in landscape while blending with the scenery.

The acquisition and installation took significant contributions from several individuals and organizations.

You will find Subtile in along the east side of the West Sacramento River Walk between Raley Field and the Barn.
